(It's not always a matter of money.I also have guitars worth thousands) They are not bad guitars and I have bought and played the Jr. The Juniors, Junior P-90, Special I P-90, and the Special II are entry level. In my experience, the Epi LP Junior is a different animal. The owner showed me that if he pressed gently on any of the dot fret markers the dot would sink into the overdrilled hole leaving a sharp edged hole. The bridge was so far out of place that the saddles couldn't intonate the axe properly no matter how much I adjusted them. Fixing that would have been money burned. There was one 'Encore' brand Strat copy that was a real PoS. On the other hand, I have set up cheap guitars for people who expected great improvements only for both them and I to be disappointed. If one pays £250 - £400 for an axe and then upgrades all the hardware and electrics, then one may find that it may, in total, cost almost as much as a model that is perceived as much "better" or more desirable. It's when one moves up to the middle ground that diminishing returns kicks in. So long as the basic foundation is solid, I think modding very cheap guitars is economically very sound. I play it at pub jams and when the new band finishes rehearsing I will gig it without hesitation. I was so impressed by the first (which I set up for a friend) that I went straight out and bought one for myself. The four I've had hands on had well fitted neck joints, great fret jobs, and were a delight to play. I can tell a good guitar from a bad one.Įach of the four Indonesian built Epi LP Juniors I have set up and played so far has been basically a good quality chasis (body, neck and fingerboard/fretwork) kitted out with a reasonable budget humbucker, a usable bridge and comedy tuners.Įven when one adds in the price of a set of replacement tuners (perfectly good ones can be had for £20), an optional replacement pickup (if one doesn't like the stock 700T) and a setup, the instrument is an absolute bargain.
